Identification and desire: Lacan and Althusser versus Deleuze and Guattari? A short note with an intercession from Slavoj Žižek

چکیده
This paper constitutes an exploration of the construction of academic identity through a retrospective autoethnographic narrative analysis. In essentially experimental mode I set out to examine processes of identification evident in this account, and in particular, the understanding of desire that resonates within it for, it can be argued, without desire there is no identity. I began my analysis by following two lines of thought concerning desire. The first, drawing on the work of Jacques Lacan, conceives of desire negatively as lack (Fink, 1995; Lacan, 2001). The second deriving from the work of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (2004) constructs desire as abundance, a positive flow. These two conceptualisations may, at first sight, appear to be in opposition but could things be otherwise? Deleuze and the Question of Desire: toward an Immanent Theory of Ethics1
The title of this paper raises two questions, each of which I would like to address in turn. The first question is: What exactly is an immanent ethics (as opposed to an ethics that appeal to transcendence)? The second question is: What is the philosophical question of desire? متن کاملA Marriage Made in Heaven
The latest fad in Continental philosophy is an unexpected one. Goodbye to Lacan and Derrida and even Deleuze. Hello to the Apostle Paul. Atheist philosophers like Alain Badiou and Slavoj Zizek have coopted Paul to their own agendas, and in their wake Jewish thinkers like Jacob Taubes and radically orthodox Christian theologians (the usual suspects) have given fresh attention to the apostle. Of ...
متن کاملWatsuji and Deleuze and Guattari in the Climate of Culture
Seth Jacobowitz, in his paper "Watsuji and Deleuze and Guattari in the Climate of Culture," analyzes theories of cultural properties in Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus alongside Watsuji Tetsuro's prewar Climate and Culture. At stake in these investigations is the status of the West as a universalizing particular ratified by these authors in the instance of its own critiq...
